What’s it like to work in Engineering, Operations, & IT?

Working at Google means solving the most fascinating and difficult problems in computer science and making a positive difference in tens of millions of lives every day. We’re looking for exceptional people who love to work on innovative products and believe passionately in our mission: to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.

 The engineer’s life at Google

Our work here requires exceptional thinking and technical expertise, and we do everything we can to facilitate it:
  • We work in small teams, which we believe promotes spontaneity, creativity and speed.
  • Any Googler might have our next great idea, so we make sure every idea is heard.
  • Because great ideas need resources to grow into reality, at Google you’ll always get the resources you need to make your dreams a reality.
  • Google engineers all have “20 percent time” in which they’re free to pursue projects they’re passionate about. This freedom has already produced Google News, Google Suggest, AdSense for Content, and Orkut – products which might otherwise have taken an entire start-up to launch.

Would you like to be a Google engineer?

No, you don't have to be a search expert; most of Google’s engineers had little or no background in search technology before coming here. Our work requires ideas from just about every area of computer science, including information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design; and so on.

You also don't have to be willing to move to the San Francisco Bay Area. We have engineering offices in Santa Monica, California; Kirkland, Washington; downtown Manhattan; Switzerland; India; and Japan, all working on the same cutting-edge computer science problems as our headquarters in Mountain View. And many Google projects that involve people from several engineering offices.

The backgrounds of our engineers also vary enormously. Some started at Google right after college; others came after spending time in academia or industry. Some love thinking long and hard about difficult problems; others just enjoy getting their hands dirty building and deploying massive, real-world systems. What they all share, though, is an enthusiasm for the challenge of making the world a better place through the intelligent application of information technology. It's a blast.

Who we’re looking for:
  • People with broad knowledge and expertise in many different areas of computer science and mathematics.
  • People with world-class programming skills.
  • People with excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • People who are passionate about their work and are great colleagues.
  • People who enjoy working in a high-energy, unstructured environment on very small project teams.
  • People with diverse interests and skills.
